Our History
In 2021, a few individuals began to support sex workers and rape victims in Northern, Ethiopia. Soon, these individuals recognised the severe neglect these group of women faced. They established a charity called Demena and committed themselves to aiding vulnerable women who are victims of sexual abuse.
DEMENA is a registered charitable organisation recognised by the Charity Commission of the United Kingdom. Demena was established in 2023 as a grant-making charity with primary mission of supporting various projects aimed at creating a positive impact within Ethiopian communities. The governance and administration of DEMENA are overseen by trustees located in the UK, Canada and Ethiopia. Additionally, we have dedicated staff members working directly in the project areas who possess a wealth of expertise and are fluent in multiple languages, enabling effective engagement with the communities across all regions of Ethiopia that we serve.
